Dissociative Experiences Scale

The Dissociative Experiences Scale (Bernstein & Putnam, 1986; Carlson & Putnam, 1993) is the most widely used self-report tool for dissociation. Dissociation isn't the problem but an old survival solution: a way of not being overwhelmed by emotions that were once impossible to bear alone. But what once protected can later limit access to vitality, connection, and an authentic experience of the self. Instruction: “Think about how often each experience happens to you when you are NOT under the influence of alcohol or substances, and choose the percentage of time.” A self-observation tool, not a diagnosis.

These questionnaires are self-observation tools and are not a substitute for clinical diagnosis by a psychiatrist or another mental health professional.
